About IECR

The Institute for Environmental and Civic Research (IECR) is an independent organisation dedicated to advancing evidence-based understanding of environmental challenges and their impact on communities. The institute conducts interdisciplinary research, informs public policy and supports civic engagement on issues such as sustainable development, waste, litter and social equity. It aims to work with academic institutions, public bodies and community organisations to find practical solutions that connect research with everyday life. Its team works across disciplines to produce research and publications that help decision-makers and the public respond to environmental and civic issues.

The role

This is initially a part-time role, which may grow as the organisation expands. The Director will provide strategic leadership for the institute: setting research priorities, guiding programme development and keeping the work aligned with IECR’s mission and long-term goals.

Day-to-day responsibilities include building a charitable organisation from the ground up, overseeing research projects, managing outputs and budgets, and maintaining high standards of methodology, ethics and impact. The Director will build partnerships with universities, government agencies, funders and community organisations, and will represent the institute at public events and conferences and in the media. The role also involves leading fundraising, developing grant proposals, monitoring performance and reporting to the board on progress and risks.

About you

  • Expertise in environmental studies, economics, public policy, social sciences or a related field
  • Leadership experience in research, non-profit, academic or public-sector organisations, including strategic planning and team management
  • Strong skills in programme design, project oversight and impact evaluation, with the ability to manage several projects at once
  • Experience of working with policymakers, researchers, funders and community groups
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex research to non-specialist audiences
  • A track record in fundraising, grant writing and budget management, including managing institutional partnerships and contracts
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion and ethical research, and to building a respectful, diverse and collaborative workplace
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills

Salary

Market rate commensurate with the role and time commitment. To be agreed upon after interview.
